Awar Odhiang’s story is one of discovery, perseverance, and success. From her humble beginnings as a teenager working at Old Navy in Calgary Market Mall to strutting down the catwalks of Italy, Awar’s journey is an inspiration to anyone who has ever dreamed of making it big in the fashion industry.
It all started when Awar was just 17 years old. She was folding sweaters at Old Navy when renowned agent Kelly Streit approached her and asked if she wanted to be a model. Awar was already a model, but she had no idea who Streit was or what he could do for her career. Despite her shyness and lack of knowledge about the industry, Streit saw something in Awar that no one else did – potential.
Streit signed Awar to his agency, Mode Models, and began to groom her for greatness. He had a history of discovering successful models, including Heather Marks and Tricia Helfer, and he knew Awar had what it took to make it big. With Streit’s guidance, Awar began to land jobs in Calgary and eventually Montreal, working with top brands like SSENSE.
But Awar’s biggest challenge was yet to come. In 2020, she boarded a plane for Italy, ready to take on the international fashion scene. It was her first time leaving Canada since arriving from a refugee camp in Ethiopia at the age of two. As she stepped onto the runway, Awar felt a mix of emotions – excitement, nerves, and a sense of accomplishment. She knew she had made it, and she was ready to take on the world.
Today, Awar is a successful international model, working with top designers and brands. She credits Streit with seeing her potential and giving her the confidence to pursue her dreams.
Awar’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and believing in oneself.
